New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball - Day One Summary   7 Oct 2014

Arena Manawatu has come alive for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Championships with the opening day delivering some tightly contested matches.

All sixteen teams played two matches on day one with each team to contest one more match on Wednesday to complete pool play before heading into the business end of the tournament.

Defending champions Mount Albert Grammar School started off their campaign with a 50-14 win over South Otago High School, backing up with a decisive 44-19 win over Auckland Girls’ Grammar School later in the afternoon.

Local team Manukura (Te Rito) also put their opposition on notice with two critical victories; 47-27 over Avondale College and 39-31 over Wellington East Girls’ College in one of the most thrilling matches of the day in Palmerston North.

Westlake Girls High School are tracking well after day one recording a 23-all draw against Sacred Heart Girls’ College, and were clear winners in their afternoon match, narrowly defeating the strong Waimea College team 31-26.

St Margaret’s are leading the charge from the South Island with a 42-30 victory over Newland’s College but came up against a determined Saint Kentigern College team in the final round of the day – the teams’ finishing level on 28-28. St Mary’s College from Wellington are also sitting pretty after the first day with two comprehensive wins over Waimea College 39-22 and Sacred Heart Girls’ College 39-23.

Play continues on Tuesday morning with Westlake Girls’ High School facing St Mary’s College while Waimea College and Sacred Heart College square off at the same time, 9.00am.

Entry to Arena Manawatu is by gold coin donation, with the finals scheduled for Friday.
