EMMY AWARDS: New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords today missed out on an Emmy nomination for best comedy series, but received nods for three other categories. Written by Gillian Orrell RRP £8.99 Know The Score Books Ltd Gillian Orrell is someone who makes aspiring writers everywhere envious. She’s a natural. Within the first paragraph I was laughing out loud on the tube – not something to be done lightly. It’s not her technical talent, more that her writing is real. It sounds like the words of the person she is – someone who leapt out of her comfort zone, discovered previously unknown qualities in herself and had a life-changing time... more>

FINANCE: Over the last nine years, almost coinciding with the term of the fifth Labour Government, certain themes have re-occurred in this column like the spectre of French teams at World Rugby Cups. These include widespread dissatisfaction with monetary policy, problems related to a wildly fluctuating currency, New Zealanders’ love affair with housing investment, a dearth of saving, and the abject failure of the stock exchange to attract new listings. Over this period, New Zealand... more>

PAMPLONA: New Zealanders tempted to join the Spanish tradition of running with the bulls should reconsider, the New Zealand Embassy in Spain says. Their warning comes as a 23-year-old New Zealander was one of 13 people injured while running with the bulls on the first day of the San Fermin festival in Pamplona in northeastern Spain yesterday. A young Irish tourist also died when he fell off an ancient city wall, the Times Online reported. The injuries were mostly bruises, cuts and possible... more>

IMMIGRATION: Pacific Island people pay immigration consultants thousands of dollars to help them get into New Zealand but it isn’t money well spent, a report released today says. GATTUNG: Former Telecom chief executive Theresa Gattung has been appointed to chair the new strong wools company set up by farmers and rural services company PGG Wrightson. The Wool Company has bought Wrightson’s strong wool business for $37.5 million -- less than the initially-announced sale price of $46 million. PGG has said the lower final price reflects the exclusion of its mid-micron business from the sale, closing debt levels and final due-diligence adjustments. The... more>

SHOTOVER: Tourism operators may have to foot the bill to clear a huge unstable slip above Otago’s Shotover River, as neither council involved wants to take action. The slip, about 2km upstream from the Edith Cavell Bridge, has closed a section of the river to the public and forced the suspension of commercial rafting trips for more than a week. The slip continues to steadily collapse, but most of the unstable rock, possibly as much as 100,000 cubic metres, remains balanced... more>

The survey, sponsored by Wizard, measures the proportion of a median after tax income needed to service an 80 percent mortgage on the median house price. It shows it took... more>
