Melbourne Cup Tour Comes To Wanganui   30 Sep 2014

Melbourne Cup

Today the community of Wanganui united to welcome the iconic 18-carat gold, $196,000 ($175,000 AUD) 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy to town.

As part of the 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour, Wanganui was selected by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) to be one of the 34 official destinations on the Cup’s 16 week Trans-Tasman schedule.

Living up to its status as the ‘People’s Cup’, locals were delighted when the Cup visited Putiki Marae, Jane Winston Retirement Village and Hospice Wanganui.

A community fun day was also held at the Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club, followed by a trip with the Vintage Car Club and another down the Whanganui River on the Waimarie.

Each year, the Tour celebrates the heroes and stories intrinsically linked to the much-loved Emirates Melbourne Cup.

VRC Acting Chief Executive Julian Sullivan said that since 2003 the Tour has provided rural, regional and metropolitan communities across Australia and New Zealand with the opportunity to experience the magic of the iconic trophy.

“We continue to be overwhelmed with how each town embraces the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour and celebrates the remarkable history of the race that stops two nations,” Mr Sullivan said.

The Cup will return to Melbourne on Monday 27 October for a week of Melbourne Cup Carnival celebrations ahead of the 154th Emirates Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
