America's Cup: 'Stay positive' says Spithill to Barker in London 10 Sep 2014
It is almost exactly a year ago that Oracle won the America's Cup, but time hasn't healed the rift between rivals Jimmy Spithill and Dean Barker.
The two were seated next to each other at a press conference to officially announce the five challengers.
For three-quarters of an hour, Barker and Spithill managed to avoid eye contact - not even a glance when Spithill admitted Barker was a favourite among the five challengers.
'To be honest you'd probably have to say Team New Zealand because of their history and time together, there's no shortcutting the amount of time that team's been together,' said Spithill.
The venue and schedule still haven't been announced and even the class of boat is still up for debate, currently the AC62.
Spithill told reporters the sailors themselves will get a say in those issues, but Barker says since Oracle have already released the Protocol, any meaningful change is unlikely now.
'All the teams have a vested interest,' he said. 'They've already started down the path of design or putting teams together, so to actually make a change to get everyone in agreement is quite difficult.'
Spithill insists changes can still be made.
'I mean, if you look at the Protocol that we came out with, we changed that based on feedback [from] speaking to the teams.
'The fact that all of us are actually meeting this afternoon, we'll get around the table and we'll make some changes, so [Barker's] just got to stay a bit more positive.'
