NZU17: Day Two Update

Media Advisory
15 July

Under sunny skies, day two of the NZ Age Group Netball Championships Under 17 event at Netball North Harbour got off to a buoyant start with some thrilling matches setting up the day ahead.

After two full days of action, pool play has now been completed with the top two teams from eight pools progressing through to the top 16. Just seven teams remain unbeaten as the event starts heading into the business end of the tournament – Auckland 1, Wellington, Hutt Valley, Dunedin, Auckland 2, Waitakere and defending champions Christchurch.

The lower teams play for the 17-32 rankings and 33-40 before the tournament comes to an end on Thursday.

As Netball New Zealand’s only outdoor event on the annual calendar, the teams have to carefully manage player welfare with two matches each day of the event and the fine weather masking a chilly breeze.

The final rankings this week make up the seeding’s for next year’s tournament, to be played at the Harbourside Netball Centre at Mount Maunganui in July, 2015.

National emerging talent selectors have been keeping a keen eye on each team over the past two days, and they’ve been pleasantly surprised by the upcoming ability of the players.

“We’re impressed by the height of players out there and we’re pleased to see some new faces that we’ve never seen before,” said selector Charissa Barham.

“For those players we’ve previously identified, it’s good to see them grow through the development programmes we have in place. It shows that the pathways we have are working and we’re seeing the results” she said.

For the first time at an Under 17 national tournament, supporters around the country will be able to follow one semi-final, the 3rd/4th play-off and the final on live streaming through the Netball New Zealand website on Thursday.
