On the day that the Rugby World Cup kicks off in England and everyone is talking about the All Blacks, you might be forgiven for thinking that people finally know the difference between Australia and New Zealand.

So London-based New Zealander Stella Duffy was rather taken aback to find a full-page advertisement in the Tate magazine – advertising Christie’s upcoming Australian and Topographical auctions – with celebrated New Zealand artist Charles Frederick Goldie’s painting of Ngapuhi Chieftainess Ina te Papatahi as the promotional image.

As an intrigued and concerned London Kiwi myself, I contacted Christie’s to enquire about the artwork. It was confirmed that it will be appearing in the “Australian Art” auction on 24 September. They were quick to clarify that they were aware that the “beautiful piece” was a New Zealand artwork and that they do know the difference between the two countries. Apparently the auction is more of a showcase of Antipodean art, and always features a couple of New Zealand pieces. Christie’s simply does not get enough New Zealand art to warrant a New Zealand-specific auction.

Fair enough. When I asked if there was any scope in future to change the name of the auction to “Antipodean Art” or “Australasian Art”, the answer was no – as people may not know what the word “Australasian” actually means. It’s interesting to note however, that on the same advertisement, the word “Australasian” is used with reference to a separate auction of Topographical Pictures, taking place in October.

A picture of the Goldie painting can be seen on its listing on the Christie's website, where it is also categorised as "Australian Art". The painting is estimated to sell for between £200,000 and £300,000.

It does seem confusing that a New Zealand artwork would be selected to promote an auction titled “Australian Art”.

Perhaps we need to change the flag after all?
