Strong Support for Education in Marlborough region

The Canterbury Community Trust has approved funding of $211,351 for the Marlborough education sector, up from $169,053 in 2013, highlighting its commitment to supporting the region and its initiatives.

“Our Marlborough Trustees have always shown a real passion for the education sector as a way to make tangible difference in young peoples lives and this has not changed, with education making up 16% of Marlborough’s annual donations budget,” says Ms Edwards.

Although there were only 19 approved applications, the diversity of projects presented was impressive. The majority of applications had a learning outcome to benefit young people, not just now, but in the future.

In the non-school children and young people sector, programmes around encouraging confidence and extending learning opportunities digitally and environmentally were prevalent.

Untouched World Charitable Trust (UTWCT) focuses on delivering outcomes for young adults from its student-led progammes, working on environmental issues at a grassroots level. Their application to the Trust this year relates to a programme on Blumine Island where work has been undertaken to ensure the continued health of the Blumine environment, along with repatriating endangered bird-life including Saddleback and Kiwi to the island.

“This project is wonderful in that it not only promotes the environment in a hands-on way but students involved often go on to choose tertiary education and careers which will significantly contribute to the long-term health outcomes of our environment and the community, as well as raising awareness of the work done on the island locally and to tourists,” says Ms Edwards.
