DateMonthYear releases new single

Hamilton’s DateMonthYear has released a new single.

Spit Out The Sun is a cover and was part of a compilation album project called ‘Lost on a Highwire’ that saw Hamilton-based songwriter Michael Miller commission a number of performers to produce covers of his work.

Spit Out the Sun is DateMonthYear’s first recording to feature the latest line-up of Emma Koretz, Brooke Baker and Tyler Leet, alongside long-standing member Trevor Faville.

Shunning traditional band formats, DateMonthYear’s structure means that members come and go as they please, with new talent stepping up regularly. The fluidity of the line-up ensures a veritable smorgasboard of musical flavours.

Formed by Faville in 2003, he describes DateMonthYear as a “way of making music”, with the simple aim to create and share. Faville has been the only ‘fixed’ member since the beginning.

Mike Miller was the song-writer, guitarist and pianist for Tsunami Band, a Hamilton band that was prevalent on the city’s music scene between 1989 and 1996.

Lost on a Highwire also features other notable local acts such as Big Muffin with the Te Pahu County Bluegrass Band, Richard Selinkoff, Pete Fountain, and Mark Tupuhi.

DateMonthYear has had a busy 2016. Earlier this year, DateMonthYear handed control over to budding videographers to create a music video for any existing song of their choosing.

Referred to as “an event” rather than a music video by Faville, three videographers took on a song each and were free to use their own taste and style, and without a single shot of the band insight.

“There are always band shots and it’s a bit boring and tedious. I wanted to let the filmmakers loose. Band shots limit what the filmmakers can do. I‘d rather get creative people and let them be creative.”

Still to come, says Faville, is another music video for a new song, and a new album.

Faville, who heads the music department at Melville High School, has been involved in the music scene for more than 30 years.

DateMonthYear’s music has featured on cable television networks such as the History and Discovery channels.

Their music can be found on most electronic music platforms including iTunes, Spotify and Youtube.
