Legends to host the third annual Halberg Sport for Life Dinner

8 August 2016

His first protégé went to the 1956 Olympic Games at Montreal, John Walker’s 1976 gold at Montreal was one of his greatest successes, and this year he is coaching Hamish Carson, a contender in the 1500m at Rio.

At 94 years of age, Arch Jelley is one of New Zealand’s legendary athletic coaches.

He will share his incredible story at the third annual Halberg Sport for Life Dinner, to be held on Thursday 29 September, where he will be a panellist alongside other sporting greats.

Hosted by the Harcourts Foundation, all the money raised at this black tie event goes directly to helping disabled Kiwi children take part in sport.

As well as Arch, other panellists will include three time Supreme Halberg Award winner Rob Waddell, BLACKCAP Grant Elliott and Auckland City FC defender Ivan Vicelich*. SKY Sport presenter Scotty Stevenson will once again MC the event.

The Harcourts Foundation is an official partner of the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, the charity started by Sir Murray Halberg in 1963. The work of the Halberg Foundation includes a team of regional Disability Sport Advisers throughout New Zealand. These expert staff work with physically disabled young people and their families to get them involved in sports and recreation.

The Foundation also provides grants to help pay for adaptive sports equipment, lessons and assistance at school camps.

Harcourts CEO Chris Kennedy says the partnership was formed after many of the Harcourts team witnessed first-hand the incredible difference Halberg makes to the lives of disabled Kiwis and their families.

“To see a child grow in confidence and really start to believe their disability doesn’t need to hold them back, is a wonderful thing.

“At Harcourts we are in awe of the work the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation does, and it is humbling to be able to hand over the proceeds of the Sport for Life Dinner to them.”

The Halberg Sport for Life Dinner will be held at Auckland’s SKYCITY Grand and ticket sales are open to everyone. There will be an opportunity to hear from the children who benefit from the Halberg Foundation and attendees will also have the chance to bid in an incredible auction of sporting memorabilia and exceptional experiences.
