Richter City Roller Derby (RCRD) will be holding its eighth season of home team games in Wellington; the first of which will be held this month on Saturday 28 May.
Last year’s winner, Brutal Pageant, will be up against the league’s former champion of 2014, Smash Malice. The home team final of 2015 was also between these two teams and it was a very tight victory, with only 8 points between the teams.
RCRD’s three home teams are made up of a combination of skater levels; from our top All Star players, some of whom have been playing roller derby since the league was founded in 2008 and before, to its recent intakes, who began the league’s fresh meat course in January and have been fully fledged members of the league for only one month. However, they have been training alongside the other members of the league and up-scaling their skills quickly.
Richter City has been welcoming new recruits since 2007, when it took on its first intake of skaters, and with the growing global appeal of the sport, New Zealand’s #1 league will be hosting another fresh meat course in July this year for those keen get some skates on and learn the game from the country’s highest ranking players.
People will be able to find out more details about joining RCRD in person at the bout on Saturday 28 or by getting in touch with Richter City (email:[email protected]).
Also up on Richter City’s calendar is The Great Southern Slam in Adelaide on 11 June. It is the world’s largest roller derby tournament, and RCRD’s B Travel Team, The Convicts, will be one of over 48 other teams from around Australia and New Zealand to be competing.
The home team season is all about friendly competition and celebrating the skaters of RCRD; it’s one the fans and skaters love. Many fans have allegiances to certain teams and skaters, whose derby names can all be found on the RCRD website (www.richtercity.co.nz).
Brutal Pageant's colours are red and pink, and Smash Malice sports black and gold, with a leopard print theme.
It is recommended that spectators come a bit earlier before the bout to ensure a seat, especially for the termed ‘suicide seats’ right beside the track for the best up-close derby action.
Doors open 6pm, bout starts 7pm – tickets available at http://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2016/roller-derby-rcrd-smash-malice-vs-brutal-pageant/wellington
