Lydia Ko and Toni Street take out top bids in ANZ Daffodil Day Art Auction, raises $19,000

Lydia Ko has taken out her second top spot of the week, raising the highest bid of $3220 in the ANZ Daffodil Day Art Auction, which closed on Wednesday night.

Ko, who on Monday won the Canadian Women’s Open, donated a painting of a golf ball on a green to the annual auction, which raises money for the Cancer Society. Bidding was intense in the closing hours of the auction on TradeMe.

Broadcaster Toni Street took out second place with her piece: Hope dares to blossom in the darkest hour, earning $1630.

Other top bids included the Prime Minister’s Beehive on Daffodil Day sketch, which raised $1625, Dion Nash’s As easy as colour by numbers, which earned $1010, and chef Michael Meredith’s Stem Nights which raised $700.

Together, the artworks from 30 well-known New Zealanders raised just over $19,000 for the Cancer Society.

Sacha McNeil’s crochet work The Wool to Love and P-Money’s Turntable Sketches earned $510 and $365 respectively.

Vinnie and Rob Sykes, the couple who purchased the P-Money and Sacha McNeil works, said they were inspired to bid after seeing the art at ANZ Ponsonby, and Rob’s two-year-long journey with brain cancer.

“What the Cancer Society do is pretty powerful,” said Vinnie Sykes.

“Every person with cancer is going through their own personal journey and while we were fortunate not to need help with things like driving and meals, just knowing that they were there to lighten the load if we needed them was so helpful.

“We used their specialist counselling service and they were so supportive and responsive.”

The brief for the artists was simple – there were no rules. They were asked to create an artwork which could be auctioned; it could be a sketch, painting, pastel, collage, abstract or even a poem or verse.

The framed artworks were available on Trade Me from August 19 – 26, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the Cancer Society.
