SOUNDS AMAZING - Come and make some noise
10 August 2015
Come and make some noise with Sounds Amazing at Expressions Whirinaki! This hands on interactive exhibition especially for children uncovers fascinating facts about sound, the science behind making it and the art of music.
Did you know that about 100 muscles must all work together so we can say this one sentence? Uncover more fascinating facts about sound, the science behind making it, and have a go at playing some unconventional instruments. Sounds Amazing engages hands, eyes and ears. How musicians get notes from string, wind or percussion instruments is revealed by strumming giant harps, striking gamelans, playing slap-a-phone (bongo pipes), or tickling the ivories of a giant keyboard. The exhibition is highly engaging for children and enables them to explore concepts relating to the science of sound including sound production and how sound travels.
Children and adults enjoy playing with the weird and wonderful instruments in this fun and hands-on exhibition.
In addition Expressions Whirrinaki is also presenting a new addition to the Classical Expressions programme especially for children; Classical Expressions for Kids. Join Ludwig Treviranus for a fun and informative introduction to classical music and an exploration of the grand piano, with audience participation and crazy classical antics for the whole family on Sunday 23 August at 2pm. Upper Hutt- born professional pianists Ludwig Treviranus and Amber Rainey come together at Expressions to present a fun and interactive introductory workshop in classical music for budding young musicians and children. This afternoon is designed to explore the interpretation and possibilities of sound and to encourage imagination in performing and hearing classical music. The grand piano will feature at the heart of the talk, and children will be able to explore the sounds of the orchestra, playing inside the piano, storytelling through music and moving to the beat.
“As Upper Hutt’s Centre for Arts and Cultural Expressions Whirinaki has always delivered top class music programmes. Now we are also encouraging young people to compose and produce their own music,” says Expressions Whirinaki Director Leanne Wickham. “Sounds Amazing and Classical Kids offers the chance to explore and understand the building blocks of sound as well as classical music. I’m thrilled that we can bring science and art together in these two fun, creative and highly hands-on experiences”.
Sounds Amazing open every day 9am - 4pm until 20 September, 836 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt, Free entry.
Classical Expressions for Kids runs Sunday 23 August at 2pm tickets $10 for an adult and $5 for a child.
