Outlook for Someday

From Film-Making Workshops to International Film Festivals

The free film-making workshops that offer a pathway for young New Zealanders to make their mark on the world stage are underway again.

The workshops are part of The Outlook for Someday film project, which supports young people to make films about the things that matter to them. Previous workshop participants have gone onto make winning films in the annual The Outlook for Someday film challenge and then to have their films selected for international film festivals.

From June to August 2015 there will be one-day workshops throughout New Zealand running from 9am to 4.30pm on weekdays.

There will also be 5 two-day Kaupapa Maori film-making workshops, each of which will include an overnight stay on a marae.

Each participant takes part in making a short film which is screened at the end of the workshop. They also come away with story ideas that are meaningful to them which they can create into further films.

All of the workshops are open to young people from school years 7 to 13 (aged 11 to 18) as well as teachers and youth workers.

Spaces are limited to 25 participants per workshop.

Students, teachers and youth workers are invited to register for a workshop in their area.www.theoutlookforsomeday.net/workshops

Now in its 9th year, The Outlook for Someday is New Zealand’s sustainability film project for young people. Each year there are 20 winning short films in the film challenge, which asks young up to the age of 24 to make short sustainability-related films of any genre, filmed with any camera and any length up to 5 minutes.

At The Someday Awards red-carpet ceremony each winning film-maker receives a commitment from The Outlook for Someday that their film will be entered into at least one international film festival the following year.

So far in 2015 two winning films from 2014 have been selected for international film festivals.

Te Ao o te Tuturuatu, which 11 year-old Tomairangi Harvey made after participating in a Christchurch workshop last year, has been selected for the prestigious Japan Wildlife Film Festival. It is one of 48 nominated films from 1853 international entries and sits alongside other nominated films made by international broadcasters such as the BBC, NHK and ZDF.

Beeing a Honey Maker, made by a team aged 11-13 from Avalon Intermediate School, has received a nomination in the Best Short Film for Kids category at the Green Screen International Wildlife Film Festival in Germany.

The entry deadline for The Outlook for Someday film challenge in 2015 is 11 September.
