Having celebrated in style turning 33-and-a-third in November of last year, Real Groovy prepares for the next big day on its calendar, Record Store Day 2015. Celebrated by independent record stores around the world, Saturday 18th April is the day Real Groovy will be showcasing the store at its most vibrant.

Highlights will include two exciting new vinyl releases on the Real Groovy Records label, with live performances and signing sessions from the featured bands, a limited edition FREE vinyl 12” for buyers of Record Store Day titles, and a full days DJ line-up of guest personalities spinning their favourite tunes.

Real Groovy is a quarter-acre music lovers paradise open 364 days of the year where people of all generations come to meet, browse and enjoy.

LARRY’S REBELS “A Study In Colour” [LP]

As far as pop groups went in 1960s New Zealand, they didn’t get much better than Auckland 5 piece Larry’s Rebels.

Hard working and electrifying live, they were adept at everything from bluesy rave ups to poppy soft psych and most everything between.

The group had seven hits during a 22 month period between 1967 and 1969, with some of their well chosen cover versions bettering the originals and their self penned songs remaining an integral part of New Zealand’s pop culture.

The group nucleus of John Williams, Nooky Stott and Terry Rouse started playing gigs while still at school. Larry Morris joined in late 1964 and then Viv McCarthy in April 1965, making this April 2015 the 50th anniversary of this most iconic line up of the group.

Largely compiled from long lost master tapes, ‘A Study In Colour' highlights both the group’s rougher R 'n' B roots on Side One and their later Pop Psych material on Side Two.

BITCH / CLEVES [2LP]

In New Zealand we knew them as the fresh faced pop band The Clevedonaires. In 1968 they were booked to entertain the Anzac troops in Viet Nam. The Viet Kong's Tet Offensive soon put a stop to that just days before they were to leave. With all of their gear packed and no bookings, they headed for Australia where they shortened their name to The Cleves and went on to become one of the hottest prog psych bands in Sydney.

1971 saw the release of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. Soon afterwards they decided to try their luck in the booming UK glam scene where they changed their name once again, this time to the more confrontational Bitch.

With only enough money to last a few months they took a huge gamble by pooling all of their money and hiring the legendary Speakeasy Club in London for a one night showcase. Guests were invited from all of the major labels and surprisingly they all turned up. By the end of the night there were two major labels bidding but WEA clinched the deal with a winning offer of a £10,000 contract.

The album was recorded at both Apple Studios, George Martin's AIR Studios and Morgan Studios. Tony Ashton and Carly Simon’s guitarist Jim Ryan produced, bringing in Madeline Bell and Doris Troy to provide backup vocals on two tracks. Completed in 1973 but shelved due to management upheavals at the label, this incredible slice of gritty glam goodness has remained unreleased ...until now!
