A Winning Start for SMEG Racing on the Track
It’s been a winning start to the season for SMEG Racing V8 SuperTourer stars Simon Evans and Shane van Gisbergen, dominating the first round of the BNT NZ SuperTourers Championship at Taupo.
The SMEG Racing duo just missed out on a perfect weekend as they won they won the first two races and nearly claimed the hat trick until fading tyres slowed Van Gisbergen late in the final race and dropped him to third.
That sets the scene for a battle of the titans at Hampton Downs on 1-2 November as last year’s champion Greg Murphy looks to get back on the leaderboard after a crash took him out of contention in the first round. He’ll be gunning for the young SMEG Racing team in a battle of experience vs youth.
But it hasn’t been just on the track that the SMEG Racing has been exciting the fans. Simon Evans was challenged by some very serious competition instore at Kitchen Things and the Auckland and Waikato Home Shows as fans attempted to beat his Bathurst lap-time on the the Grand Turismo 6 Playstation game.
Simon’s time remained unbeaten, but Shaun Gardner from Matamata was the winner of a VIP experience and hot lap at the Pukekohe round of the V8 Supertourers, on the 29-30th November.
Another SMEG prize winner was Mark McNamara from Auckland who also won a VIP experience and a hot lap in the SMEG racing car with Simon Evans. Mark was randomly drawn from those that purchased SMEG appliances during the promotional period.
SMEG New Zealand Distributor and Managing Director Rachel Louie said that she was delighted to see just how popular Simon Evans and SMEG Racing are with the fans.
“We had hundreds of people join us at the Homeshows to meet Simon, to get his autograph and take a turn on the simulators.
“It created a real festival atmosphere at the Kitchen Things stores and at the Auckland and Waikato Home Shows, with the SMEG Holden race car, transporter and the SMEG Racing simulators all on site,” she said.
Louie says that the key is the professionalism of Simon Evans and his team.
“SMEG is all about superior performance and the SMEG Racing team has proven that on the track. We’re really excited to be involved with Simon and the SMEG Racing Team and we’re delighted that it has been such a fun and rewarding partnership,” she said.
Pictures of entries and the SMEG Racing apprearances can be seen on the SMEG NZ Facebook page with the #SMEGracing hashtag.
