Springbored Snow Carnival celebrates sun and snow

Sun, snow, beats and parties are the name of the game next month as Queenstown ski areas Coronet Peak and The Remarkables celebrate spring with five days and nights of action and fun.

Wrapping up the 2014 season with a bang on the snow and downtown, the carnival will include everything from the Burton Stash Gathering, to scavenger hunts, night skiing and the Red Bull King of Bob race, ski retro days and film comps, all mixed in with some serious après ski.

Kicking it all off on Wednesday (Sept 10) at The Remarkables will be THE industry battle to end all industry battles, setting local ski and snowboard rental outlets and retail shops head-to-head to battle it out for top honours.

Starting at 11am, there are a range of challenges from the terrain park to fun races and down town antics that will determine the top dogs in town. A downtown ‘after party’ for ski and snowboard reps and shop staff will be a way of saying ‘thanks’ for the season.

On Thursday (Sept 11) sign up at the Red Bull Hummer at the bottom of Curvey Basin chairlift from 10am to take part in The Hunt by Torpedo7. Scrambling around The Remarkables, teams will compete against each other to collect the clues and complete challenges in a race to the finish line.

Teams will decided whether raw speed or strategic play will win the day as there are a range of spot prizes to be won as well as the top prizes.

Friday (September 12) sees the return of the legendary Red Bull King of Bob when boardercross meets tobogganing as racers fly down a purpose-built course on the smallest sled there is - the Bob. The event will mark the start of the final weekend of night skiing at Coronet Peak.

On Saturday (September 13) the Burton Stash Gathering at The Remarkables will become the focus of all things fun and creative with the call going out to boarders of all abilities and ages to bring their most expressive lines to a low key, grass-roots style jam.

Entry’s free and everything’s scheduled to kick off at 11am, with a free BBQ, music from the Red Bull Hummer and prizes for creativity from Burton adding to the vibe.

Still on Saturday, everyone’s invited to dust off the old skis and bust out the onesies as the memorable Retro Day takes over both the Remarks and Coronet Peak, celebrating the great, the glorious and the sometimes questionable fashion choices of days past.

On Sunday (Sept 14) there’s fun for the family at Coronet Peak with a Kea Club treasure hunt -- entrants will be provided a map with clues and a checklist.

Over at The Remarkables the Streets Mini Shred gives all young skiers and riders the chance to show off their tricks in the Tararua Iced Coffee Beginner Park. Categories include U14, U12 and U10 for girls and boys with heaps of prizes on offer. It’s free to enter with registration at guest services between 9am and 10am on the day. A $20 bib deposit is payable (return the bib and you get it back).
