Mike Pero Sponsors Barry Sheene Motorcycle Classic
Mike Pero Real Estate have taken the naming rights sponsorship for the Barry Sheene Motorcycle Classic at Hampton Downs this Labour Weekend October 24-25-26. The Barry Sheene is a tribute meeting to one of the great characters of the Grand Prix arena and twice World 500cc Grand Prix Champion.
This annual historic motorcycle race meeting is the largest International meeting in NZ’s history with fifty Australians competing against the New Zealand Team for the coveted Trans Tasman Trophy.
Mike Pero is one of New Zealand’s best known businessmen through his previous Mike Pero Mortgages business and in recent years, his growing Mike Pero Real Estate franchise In his youth Mike Pero took to motorcycle racing like a duck to water and went on to win twenty-two New Zealand Road Race titles on Yamaha machines during his 1980s career. ‘I am very proud to be the major sponsor of the Barry Sheene, it’s a premier historic race meeting, New Zealand’s largest road race meeting with over three hundred riders.
Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts were my heroes when I started racing. Barry was a larger than life character, a cheeky cigarette smoking cockney who challenged the establishment but delivered the goods on the racetrack. Barry won the European F750 title in 1973, numerous British titles and the World 500cc Grand Prix Championship in 1976 & 1977.
Barry became a Superstar in the British media and was the first rider to attract major sponsorship to motorcycle racing. Barry and his family retired to Australia’s Gold Coast in 1984 and worked as a motorsport TV commentator and property developer. He passed away in 2003. At the Barry Sheene Classic we will honour Barry’s memory, race machines from the 1930s through to 1989, and enjoy catching up with old friends,’ says Mike Pero.
Pero, himself will also be competing on a Yamaha 250W, a former Grand Prix machine from A special feature of the event will be a focus on ‘women racers’ with our International Guest Maria Costello MBE from England Maria was the first woman racer to podium at the Isle of Man TT, received her MBE ‘for services to motorcycling’ in 2009 and published her auto-biography in 2012, ‘Queen of Bikers’. She will be joined by twenty women racers from Australia and New Zealand including Sophie Lovett from Australia.
Mike Pero Real Estate was started in 2011. The business has expanded rapidly across New Zealand with more than 50 Mike Pero Real Estate outlets from Invercargill to Northland.
The company offers a commission rate of 2.95% which is less than most other national brands. For further details contact Mike Pero on 0800 500 123 [email protected]
