Carins pursuing justice   25 May 2010

CRICKET - Former New Zealand captain Chris Cairns has vowed to take legal action against suspended Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi for suggesting he was involved in match-fixing.

The all-rounder's name was taken off the players' auction list for the third edition of the Indian Premier League in January this year, and Modi had written on Twitter that Cairns was omitted 'due to his past record in match-fixing in the Indian Cricket League'.

Cairns was part of that rebel league - which has since been dissolved - and played for Chandigarh Lions.

He had threatened legal action against the suspended IPL commissioner in January, and has now pledged to go ahead with the proceedings.

"We are trying to have Modi served with papers. We're going through that process in India but it takes time to get through the court system. We're waiting for him, though," the 39-year-old told the New Zealand Herald.

"If he decides to go to the UK we'll have him served there but it is so difficult to know his movements - especially with all the turmoil he's embroiled in. It's frustrating but we've initiated the process and just have to wait."

Modi is facing allegations of irregularities in his management of the tournament, and was last month put on suspension by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Cairns said: "We need to go through the proper channels to find out what to do next. It was going to be tough anyway when you do something like this but we are left with no option."

"We will continue to pursue justice but at the moment he's also going through a process which needs to reach its conclusion before any judgement is passed."

The former New Zealand talisman stressed he is not trying to settle a score with Modi and simply wants to protect his reputation.

"I still have to go through this to clear my name," Cairns said. "There's not much emotion or anything like that but it is sad I've had to go through this process."

Cairns is eager to contribute to New Zealand cricket in the future.

He said: "I'm a realist though and I'm not going to put people in a compromising position. Once this situation with Modi is sorted out I'm more than happy to help."
