Black Ferns romp home over the Wallaroos 24 Oct 2016
The Black Ferns have continued their trans-Tasman superiority, crushing the Wallaroos 67-3 at Eden Park.
The evening had started promising for Australia, with centre Nareta Marsters stretching the Black Fern’s defence and making two early breaks in midfield during a scrappy opening few minutes.
The Black Ferns seemed in intent on running the ball from any position on the field, but were guilty of ambitious passing and leaving ball runners isolated at the break down.
Their first try came in slightly fortuitous circumstances after only four minutes when captain, Fiao'o Fa'amausili, scored when following up on what appeared to be a rather innocuous kick into the Australian in-goal.
Wallaroos fullback Sarah Riordan was slow to react and dived over the ball, which the was happily pounced upon by the New Zealand hooker.
Four minutes later halfback Kendra Cocksedge scored from a quick tap five metres out from the line, which she then converted to take the score out to 21-3.
Minutes later Winiata had her first, finishing off a slick interchange of passes between herself and wing Honey Hireme. The Wallaroos competed hard and aggressively at the break down, and while they managed to snaffle some turnover ball, they were hammered by referee Alhambra Nievas, for repeated ruck infringements.
Eventually Nievas lost patience, and the Wallroos played the last ten minutes of the half with 14, after loose head prop, Louise Burrows, was sinbinned for an offence never her own goal line.
The Black Ferns were over again from the subsequent lineout, lock Eloise Blackwell scoring from a rolling maul that included most of the Black Fern’s backline.
The Black Ferns’ 31-3 halftime lead meant the game was effectively over as a contest.
Australia were more competitive in the opening 20 minutes of the second period, but struggled to get out of their own half and seemed to lack options of attack.
All too often aimless licks were sent down the field into the arms of the Black Ferns back three, who made easy metres through the Wallaroos defensive line.
Winiata then scored two in the space of 10 minutes to complete her hat trick, sharply finishing two backline moves, as the Black Ferns scythed through the tiring Wallaroos defence.
Australia’s trouble deepened when they were reduced to 14 - Burrows seeing red for a second yellow card offence in the 71st minute.
The Black Ferns ruthlessly took advantage of the numerical mismatch – running in three tries in the final five minutes.
Fa'amausili got herself on the end of a backline move to score a deserved second try, before two minutes later Winiata finished a move that began in the Black Ferns 22 to claim her fourth of the night.
In injury time, Hireme capped an impressive evening, wrong footing the two Australian defenders to finish a 40 metre injury time break and seal the record-equaling margin.
SCORERS:
Black Ferns 67 (S. Winiata 4, F. Fa'amausili 2, C. Alley, K. Cocksedge, E. Blackwell, V. Subritzky-Nafatali, H. Hireme tries; Cocksedge 4 cons, K. Brazier 2 cons) Wallaroos 3 (A. Hewson pen) Halftime: 31-3.
