$750,000 modern learning block for Tairua School

Construction will commence early next year on a new state of the art modern learning block at Tairua School.

The building, incorporating three classrooms, three break-out spaces, a resource room and new toilets, comes after the Ministry of Education approved funding for two new classrooms to cater for the school’s increasing roll. The proposed development will involve the relocation of one existing classroom. Students, staff and parents cheered as principal Brendan Finn publically announced the news.

“This is the most exciting and significant development to take place at Tairua School in the 16 years that my children have been attending,” said Board of Trustees Chairperson Maria Cory-Wright.

“Our school has been leading the way in terms of our curriculum and innovative teaching. To have a modern, purpose built space that enhances collaborative, student driven learning, is the next step in this very exciting journey.”

Principal Brendan Finn thanked the school community for their patience over the last two years as the plan was negotiated with the Ministry.

“The creativity we have shown in adapting our existing facilities to accommodate what has been close to a 100 per cent roll increase in the past 6 years was a factor in securing this investment. Not only have our students and staff coped admirably, but we have managed to extend and improve the programs we offer and raise student achievement at the same time. It has been a massive team effort and I am deeply proud of everyone,” Mr Finn said.

Architects are already working on a design for the new block which will represent an investment of $750,000 with both Ministry and the Board of Trustees contributing to the overall cost. A draft plan is expected to go on display for public consultation next week.

“We have also been asked by the Ministry to incorporate a proposed location for two further classrooms that are likely to be required over the next 2 to 5 years. The population studies that the MOE has done mirrored our own observations and research which predict significant growth in the Tairua area over the next few years. It is heartening to know that our school is now in a position to meet and embrace this growth,” Mr Finn stated.
