Press Release 10 November 2016 – for immediate release

National Cheerleading Competition Was a Great Success!

The New Zealand Cheer Union (NZCU) held its Cheerleading National competition at The Trusts Arena, Henderson, Auckland on 29-30 October 2016 and it was an electrifying event. The competition involved over 1500 entries which is the highest number of registrations the NZCU has ever seen. Over 1000 Male & Female Athletes travelled from all over the country to battle it out for the 2016 NZCU National Championship titles.

Competitive cheerleading is a unisex sport that involves physical activity governed by rules under which a winner can be declared and its primary purpose is to compare the skills of participants. The 2016 NZCU Nationals showcased many different divisions, including the main event Club Cheer Teams as well as School, University & Special Needs Cheer Teams, Dance Teams, Individual Cheer & Dance Solos, Duos & Trios and Cheerleading Stunt Groups. This competition had internationally qualified cheer and dance judges to ensure everyone was judged fairly and at an especially high standard.

First place Cheer and Dance teams were awarded with invitational bids to the 2017 Aloha Spirit Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii. The overall highest scoring Cheer and Dance Teams were awarded Qualifiers to the 2017 All Star Games in Las Vegas, Nevada. Partially Paid Bids to the 2017 AASCF Scholastic Nationals in Sydney, Australia were awarded to the top School and University Teams. And a Fully Paid entry bid to the 2017 Aussie Gold International Cheer & Dance Championships in Gold Coast, QLD Australia was awarded to the Grand Champion Cheer team. The international awards were an enormous draw card for many teams looking to travel overseas to show the world just what New Zealand has to offer and the NZCU are proud to send the top teams abroad to represent New Zealand.

The event would not have been possible without the help of volunteers, the support of the cheerleading community and our sponsors. A special thank you to Infinity Foundation, Pub Charity and Trillian Trust for providing funding for the event without which the event would not have been achievable.

The 2017 NZCU Nationals will be held in Wellington on October 28th & 29th and promises to be another impressive event.
