Moore claims big win at Marlborough show

Former national circuit champion Angus Moore got his 10th season in Open-class shearing with a big victory at the Marlborough A and P Show on Saturday.

Moore, from Ward, won by more than 13 points, finishing the 10-sheep final almost two-and-a-half minutes ahead of nearest rival Chris Jones, of Blenheim, with board and pen judging points 5pts better than next-cleanest shearer and eventual runner-up Dave Brooker, of Hawarden, .

It was only his seventh win in Open-class since graduating to the top class after winning eight Senior titles, in 2006-2007, including a Golden Shears and New Zealand Championships double. He had previously won the Marlborough Intermediate title in 2004 and Senior title a year later.

The appearance by the former Marlborough Boys College head boy, who won the PGG Wrightson National final at the Golden Shears in 2012 and subsequently shore two transtasman tests for New Zealand, was a big fillip for Saturday’s show, although entries across the four grades totalled just 17 shearers.

But it was a good day for the old school, with former pupils Alex Drake and Todd Magill winning the Senior and Junior finals respectively..

Drake, who included a New Zealand Corriedale title among four Intermediate wins last season before stepping up to win at his Senior debut at the Flaxbourne show, won Saturday’s Senior event by less than a point from runner-up Mark Rogers, of Brightwater. Third was Takaka shearer Enkhnasan Chuluunbataar, who in February will represent his native Mongolia in the World Championships in Invercargill.

It was a big day for Oxford shearer Eve Peddie who blitzed the opposition in the Intermediate final, beating runner-up Kaleb Avery by 8.63pts. Peddie hadn’t won since two Junior victories two seasons ago, but shore in four Intermediate finals last year.

Sarah Higgins, of Havelock, also grabbed some bragging rights, by taking third place and beating brother Duncan Higgins.
