Victory for McNaught-McFarlane in Second World Cup Round

Helen McNaught-McFarlane and her quirky grey Polish import Carnutelabryere were in a class of their own today, winning the second round of the Country TV FEI World Cup (NZ series) at the APL Showjumping Waikato Festival at Mystery Creek.

The Taupo combination were the only ones of 19 to complete the two rounds with a clean slate.

McNaught-McFarlane was full of praise for both her competition and course designer Gerrit Beker.

“It was a magnificent course. That was a proper track out there and one that really challenged us,” she said. “Gerrit is a very clever builder. We need to have more tracks like that because it raises the whole standard.”

Twelve combinations with eight faults or less came back for the second round. McNaught-McFarlane, Mathew Dickey (Taranaki) aboard Quango, and Katie Laurie (Mystery Creek) on Dunstan On The Point Eve all had clean slates.

Clears in the second went to McNaught-McFarlane, Lucy Fell (Opiki) on Tinapai and Laurie aboard Dunstan Breeze, but with faults accumulating over the two rounds there was just one clear winner.

McNaught-McFarlane said Carnutelabryere – or Brian as most know him – had been hard work in the opening round, but the second saw him focused and firing.

“It is great to see a line-up of 19 in the class and no-one disgraced themselves – there was a bit of bad luck for some but also some great efforts.

“I do love this show,” she said. “I love the indoor (arena) and Brian likes anything where he thinks there is a crowd there to watch him.”

McNaught-McFarlane who won the World Cup (NZ) series final last season and has twice placed second in the series, has her sight set on going one better this season.

All combinations are chasing valuable points in the six round series, with their best four rounds to count. The winner of the New Zealand league has the opportunity to represent the country at the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping 2015/2016 Final which is being held in Omaha, Nebraska, in the United States, from March 29-April 1, 2017.

In the Equissage Pony Grand Prix today, Olivia Dalton (Auckland) had the odds stacked in her favour for the jump-off with both Simply Samantha HH and Hopeful Illusion, but Emma Watson (Morrinsville) and Fun House came through to take the honours.

Watson and her former Pony of the Year were double clear in 39.03 seconds, with Dalton leaving everything up aboard Simply Samantha HH but stopping the clock just that smidgen short, in 40.37. Her second mount Hopeful Illusion had a late rail to finish with four faults in 41.59.

Dalton was also fourth with Just Nuts who was the fastest four-faulter from the opening round.
