Wairarapa double at Manawatu show

Wairarapa claimed a significant shearing sports double on Sunday when shearer David Buick, of Pongaroa, and Eketahuna woolhandler Emaraina Braddick won their respective Open finals at the Manawatu Show in Feilding.

Buick won the Open shearing final for a third year, beating World Championships selection series favourites and Hawke’s Bay shearers John Kirkpatrick and Rowland Smith in a three-man final over 20 sheep each as all three put in their last show before the New Zealand team selection showdown in Christchurch on Friday, with two machine-shearing places up for grabs fro the World Championships in Invercargill on February 8-11..

It was the first time reigning World, Golden Shears and New Zealand champion Smith had been beaten in the four North Island shows this season, and crowned a successful day for Team Pongaroa which also claimed the Junior shearing title and the Novice woolhandling title.

Braddick’s win was also significant, being just her second in Open class – the first having been at Dannevirke in February.

Defending Manawatu champion Joel Henare, of Gisborne, was absent, but Braddick did beat Te Kuiti’s Keryn Herbert and Taihape’s Sheree Alabaster, who will join him in the woolhandling team selection final in Christchurch on Thursday.

Just two seconds separated Buick, Kirkpatrick and Smith, Buick claiming the honours with the better quality points.

Napier shearers Paraki Puna and Ricci Stevens and Woodville’s Tegwyn Bradley continued their jockeying for Senior supremacy in the eastern and lower North Island. Puna got the nod as just 0.7pts separated the three after a 10-sheep final. The runner-up was Stevens, who had won at the Wairarapa Show eight days earlier, while third was Bradley, winner at the Royal Show in Hastings on October 21.

Porangahau shearer Anaru Wakefield extended an unbeaten run in Intermediate finals in the North Island this season, making it four-from-four, while there was a Team Pongaroa quinella in the Junior final in which Cullum Pritchard, of Pongaroa, scored his second win.

Jamie McLean of Taihape, had her second win this season by winning the Senior woolhandling final, in which Braddick’s sister, Marika, was runner-up.

Dannevirke youngster Cortez Ostler, aged 12, had his first win in the Junior woolhandlingfinal.
