Trying to avoid the straight-jacket   4 Aug 2006

Al Pitcher at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

COMEDY: Here I am again in Edinburgh – the festival, the pressure, the nerves, the self doubt ... the list just goes on. Have you ever got yourself involved in something that just consumes and eats away at you constantly – every thought and every minute. Well, doing the Edinburgh Festival is that times 100. It's almost like a trade fair, many industry types turn up for boozing, partying and, oh yeah, the shows as well.

This is my third solo comedy show its called The AL PITCHER EXPERIENCE, which I thought was a neutral and average kind of title, but oh no, not according to a certain publication that called it "the worst title in the history of bad titles". It also said I was a funny man but the original slamming of my much thought about title was a low blow.

I'm one of many Kiwi stand ups going to the festival this year. We all support each other and there will be many late nights propping up each others egos. My show the "AL Pitcher Experience" is on between August 3-28 at 22.30 at The Tron which is just off the Royal Mile. It's just an hour of fun and it won't burn many brain cells but it might let you release a bit of giggle wind.

Jarred Christmas, who is a brilliant comedian, has his show The Geek Show, it’s a look at his life's geeky moments. It includes some mindblowing dancing and comes highly recommended. He's on at 21.40 at the Pleasance Courtyard.

Another one to get a ticket for is Rhys Darby – Based on Actual Events. His show is a departure from his past Edinburgh shows but is absolutely superb and will be a hot ticket up there. Catch Ben Hurley as well. He's only doing one night but it's August 21, so don’t miss it.

Hope that helps the people going up and makes the ones who aren't jealous! It's gonna be another rollercoaster ride so see you up there. I'll write another column in the middle of the festival when I will probably need that straightjacket again.

Check out or, take care and och aye.
