TRANS-TASMAN TEAM FREEDIVING COMPETITION top freedivers from New Zealand and Australia go head to head for the inaugural Trans-Tasman Cup
TRANS-TASMAN TEAMS COMPETITION (T3C) is a pool based freediving team competition to decide what nation has the best freedivers.
The TRANS-TASMAN TEAMS COMPETITION has been created to allow the best 8 freedivers from NZ to join forces in two Nationals Teams to take on Australia’s best 8 in three pool based apnea disciplines; STATICS (Breath hold time), Dynamics with fins (distance underwater on breath hold) and Dynamic No Fins (distance underwater on breath hold without fins). This competition is run over three days at NZ’s National Aquatic Centre – AUT Millennium Auckland on 4th,5th & 6th August 2016.
The T3C will be contested by NZ’s best freedivers including:
Dave Mullins, Guy Brew, Kathryn Nevatt, Ant Williams, Chris Marshall, Lewis Jones, Tania Routhwaite and Phil Clayton. Between them they have held 7 World Records and 48 NZ National Records.
Australia will be represented by: Leigh Woolley, Nicole Keating, Brent Warren, Craig de Vos, Anh Tu, Natasha Darke, Andrew Kelly, Mark Williams.
While many hold the Australian team as the underdogs, the key to this competition is consistency. The way a freediving competition is scored, it takes just one athlete pushing too far and being disqualified, and the outcome will become anyone’s guess.
Competitive Freediving has huge profile and a massive following in European countries along the Mediterranean coast. Their top freedivers are household names, whereas our top freedivers, a number of who have held world records or won gold medals at the world champs are unknown. This makes the sport very Eurocentric with our divers typically having to travel around the world to compete in high level events. This event has therefore been created to give this opportunity closer to home, while at the same time fostering collaboration, communication and competition in the freediving field with our nearest neighbors and biggest rivals!
