Day one of the 2016 ITKD Taekwon-Do National Championships and Oceania Invitational in Tauranga had a few of the stars challenged in their bids to win titles.
The nearly 400 competitors had enthusiastic support particularly for the likes of 16-year-old Frances Lloyd a Tauranga Girls College student who is the world junior champ and duly won the Junior Dan Specialty gold ahead of Bianca Koper from Auckland North. Lloyd also walked away with the Junior Hyper 1st-3rd Dan Sparring again ahead of Koper with Counties Manuaku’s Mabel Tata the bronze.
Another notable gold medal winner was multiple world champion Melissa Timperley from Counties Manukau who was successful in the Female Senior Light 1st-6th Dan Sparring. She also took away the Female Seniors 2nd-4th Dan gold in Patterns ahead of Auckland Norths Jacqueline Geurts with Cantabrians Helen Caley and Angela Oliver the bronzes.
Palmerston North’s Matt Bowden gained a gold over Auckland North’s Damon Williams and Luke Jackson from Christchurch. Australia’s Trent Haden won gold in the Male Senior Light Heavy 1st-6th Dan competition and had countrywoman Oxana Gorskina take gold in the Female Senior Middle 1t-6th Dan.
Many of the men’s medals will be decided on day two of the tournament.
East Auckland’s Roisin Gilles a gold medallist in the 1st Dan Patterns at the World Champs won the nation title ahead of fellow Aucklanders Kavita Jaduram with silver and Georgia Moore and Niketa Wells (Counties Manukau) bronze medals.
Disciplines at the tournament include sparring, power breaking (board breaking), special techniques, patterns and team events.
New Zealand were the overall winners of the world championships in Italy last year, finished third in Spain two years early and prior to that were the championship team when the tournament was held in Wellington in 2011.
