The Mad Dog Retires
Samoan Born Cruiserweight boxer Monty Filimaea retires at the age of 29. The now New Zealand citizen boxer announced in the ring after his fight against Lance Bryant that he is retiring as a professional boxer.
In Filimaea career, he has been in the ring with many greats including: IBO World Title Contender Robert Berridge, Former WBA - PABA Champion Adrian Taihia, Multiple Regional title holder David Aloua and WBO World Title Contender Brian Minto.
In Filimaea twenty six fight career, he has fought one Light Heavyweight bout, four heavyweight bouts and twenty one Cruiserweight bouts. All of his bouts were fought in New Zealand. He is the first boxer to have won both NZPBA and NZNBF national titles in the Cruiserweight division.
Filimaea began his career in 2010 with no Amateur experience, against Adam Riley in Auckland New Zealand.Unfortunately Filimaea didn't have a good start in his career as he had a six fight losing streak before getting his first win.
Midway through his career, Filimaea teamed up with former world title contender and international boxing Legend David tua. This was the best move in his career as this produced a seven win streak between 2012 and 2014.
Filimaea has competed in three professional Cruiserweight tournaments. In 2011, he competed in an 8 man tournament, defeating debutant Faisal Attayee in the quarterfinals, however losing to Shane Chapman in the Semi Finals. In 2014, he competed in his second tournament, called the Super II. He won in the quarterfinals against Golden Gloves Champion James Emmerson. He lost in the semifinals against Samoan veteran Vaitele Soi. In 2015, Filimaea fought in his final tournament in the Super 8 III. Unfortunately he lost in the quarterfinals against Brian Minto.
According to Boxrec, Filimaea ended his career ranked 8th in New Zealand, 363rd in the world and now retiring at 13th P4P New Zealand in the Cruiserweight division.
Filimaea end his career with 10 wins, with 6 going by way of Knockout, 15 defeats and one draw. Filimaea has fought an impressive ninety rounds in his career.
Monty Filimaea has sadly fought his last fight at Bush Multisport Stadium in Pahiatua. Filimaea will be very much missed from the boxing ring.
