Round 1 Upsets at AON New Zealand Junior Open

Round one of the AON New Zealand Junior kicked off in Whangarei with most games going to plan, however there were some unexpected upsets in the boys and the girls divisions.
In the Girls Open the top seeds went through unscathed with Abbie Palmer, Anna Hughes and Anika Jackson winning in 3. Kaitlyn Watts opponent had to retire injured after rolling her ankle early on in the first game. The only upset of the Girls Open Draw came when 18th seed and local Northland player Sian Duggan took out Blenheim player Amelia Wadsworth in a close fought 4 setter.
In the Boys Open Jamie Oakley had a BYE first up, whilst Scott Galloway, Matthew Lucente and Alex Oswald of Australia all took out their opponents in 3.
The first upset of the Boys Open came when David Matthews took out Australian Jack Hudson. Hudson had claimed the first game in a tight battle, but Matthews managed to get the second game to swing his way and level the score. Matthews looked on strong form in the third whilst Hudson lost his rhythm. Hudson came out fighting in the fourth and wanted to do his best to level the scores. With points going back and forth between the players and the game going long Matthews was able to keep his cool and proceed to the top 16.
The second upset of the Boys Draw came when Michael Shelton-Agar went down to Charlie Barker. Charlie managed to play solid squash in the first 2 games and whilst Shelton-Agar kept on his tail he was not able to convert the first 2 games. It looked as if something changed in the next 2 games as Shelton-Agar dominated the court and never gave Barker the chance to get into it. Both players played strong squash in the fifth and it was a war of attrition and mental stamina on the court. Barker however showed what he was made of and closed out the game 11-9 in the fifth moving forward to the top 16.
The top 16 round kicks off tonight at the Whangarei Squash Club at 7pm. Full match scores can be found below.
