Ricky Murphy Successfully defends his New Zealand Title by TKO

Auckland's Ricky “The Ghost” Murphy was successful last night for his first New Zealand Professional Boxing Association (NZPBA) Super Welterweight Title Defence at North Shore Event Centre, against Credentialed Kickboxer Ben Sisam.

Murphy the 24-year-old who was born in Fielding and trained by New Zealand boxing legend Shane “The Mountain Warrior” Cameron, won his title against Daniel Maxwell back in August. After knocking Maxwell down four times during the fight, Murphy walked away with the belt by Unanimous Decision.

Murphy’s opponent, 36-year-old Ben Sisam, is a well Credentialed kickboxer, fought in over 35 kickboxing bouts and winning a World title. Sisam Boxing record is another story, losing seven out of nine bouts. This being Sisam’s second attempt this year to capture the NZPBA Super Welterweight title. Unfortunately Sisam lost by Technical Knockout in the ninth round, making this Murphy’s eighth win.

A representative from the World Boxing Association and Pan Asia Boxing Association was in attendance for last nights event. Jimin Hwang was told to be in attendance to scout Murphy for a potential regional title in the near future. Hwang said at the end of the night that he was impressed by Murphy’s performance and will gladly report back to the WBA and PABA president.

The next question is who will be next on Murphy’s list for a title defence? Will it be Auckland’s 23-year-old undefeated boxer Shay Brock, Christchurch’s undefeated boxer Bowyn Morgan, or two division New Zealand National Boxing Federation (NZNBF) champion Hamilton’s undefeated boxer Cairo George? Whoever Murphy fights next, it will be a big step up and an explosive bout.

Last night’s fight was recorded by Maori Television weekly Thursday night show “Whawhai”. The fight will be aired within the next coming months.
