The sun was out for the first day of the Marriott London Sevens – with the Galactic-themed party atmosphere building throughout the day.
Day one sold out well in advance, bringing the biggest single-day attendance in the series. Although there appeared to be a few empty seats, Saturday’s event was well-attended and the roar of revellers ensured this was probably the biggest Twickenham Sevens party in recent memory. 100,000 fans are expected across both days.
Champions New Zealand were naturally a favourite, and easily secured a 38-0 victory over Wales early on in the day. We saw tries from Rieko Ioane, Beaudein Waaka, Gillies Kaka, Sherwin Stowers and Scott Curry.
New Zealand’s second game of the day was probably one that most Kiwi fans were not at all concerned about, but an almost-immediate try from Japan quickly had over-confident New Zealanders worried. At half-time New Zealand trailed Japan by two points, with the score 12-14 to Japan. Luckily a stronger performance in the second half saw New Zealand seize victory, with a final score of 26-14. But the match was a good reminder that no side should be too comfortable, and is testament to the fact the Sevens Rugby remains competitive.
The Boys in Black’s final match for the day was the big one: Australia. A strongly fought game on both sides, but the Kiwis remained undefeated, smashing our biggest rival 24-10.
England also put in an impressive performance across the day, with victories thrashing Kenya 40-0 and Brazil 56-7. Sadly the home side fell to Scotland, 22-19. New Zealand will face a no doubt even more determined England side in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Fiji lead the World Series standings with 147 points, and will face second-place holders South Africa tomorrow who have 142 – and had a surprising loss to USA, 20-12. New Zealand are not far behind the leaders with 139 points. England have 117 points, and Australia 101. Tomorrow’s season-ender could be too close to call.
