Monty Betham Takes Adam Hollioake’s Bait   18 Feb 2015

Monty Betham has taken the bait and answered twitter troll, Adam Hollioake’s challenge to fight on the SUPER 8 Redemption Card on March 28th in Christchurch.

The former UK Cricket skipper, who is the only international cricketer to become a professional fighter, threw down the gauntlet to Betham on twitter last week, accusing the former Kiwi’s captain of hiding behind his wife’s lack of approval as an excuse.

“I dream of feeding you my right hand @MontyBetham13 … Oh hang on … Mrs Betham wont let Monty fight.”

Despite writing the challenge off initially, “Adam let’s face it – you couldn’t feed anyone your right hand. It’s too slow! I could boil a cup of tea & have a pack of biscuits before it got near me.”

Betham eventually relented when Hollioake called him out on live radio and suggested SUPER 8 promoter John McRae put the fight on.

After initial hesitation McRae created room on the March 28 card for the pair to trade blows.

“After watching the saga roll out on twitter, it seemed to capture the public’s imagination and, combined with Hollioake’s legitimacy as a professional fighter, made it appealing to create room on the card.

“We agreed terms yesterday and I’m looing forward to an exciting professional bout which has the added benefit of raising funds for KidsCan.”

36 year old Betham is looking forward to and silencing the cheeky Brit in the ring,
“On the surface it’s been pretty good natured, but he should be careful what he wishes for, he’s ruffled a few feathers.”

Hollioake, who’s now based in Queensland, sees the bout as a genuine challenge for his combat skills.

“I’ve been fighting a while and have had three pro boxing bouts and several MMA fights and this my way to gain respect.

Monty’s the same size and weight and highly respected and I think I can beat him.”
