With one of the biggest summer line-ups of major events that New Zealand has ever seen, event organisers are facing a bigger need than ever before for volunteers.
Over the first six months of 2015, the ICC Cricket World Cup, FIFA U20, Volvo Ocean Race Stopover and Crankworx are all taking place – providing New Zealand the huge opportunity to showcase itself as a world class venue in hosting these international events.
But with more events comes a need for more volunteers – and event organisers need Kiwis to come on board to ensure their success.
“It’s really exciting that we have all these incredible events taking place in New Zealand,” says CEO of the New Zealand Association of Event Professionals (NZAEP), Vicki Watson. “But the volunteer component is absolutely crucial to the success of those events and many of them are still in need of volunteers to sign up.”
Ms Watson is encouraging Kiwis to visit www.volunteernet.org.nz , an NZAEP-owned website designed to partner volunteers with events. At any one time there is a list of community, regional and national events to volunteer for.
“It’s also timely that with the New Year approaching, Kiwis may be thinking about resolutions – and ‘giving back’ is often one of the things people want to do more of. Well here’s your opportunity to do that - in the form of volunteering.
“People often think of volunteers as an adjunct to the event but, in actual fact, they play an integral role. A country’s or region’s success in hosting events comes down to how friendly and approachable the interaction is with visitors and participants – and that responsibility often falls on the volunteers.
But it’s not just one way traffic; volunteering gives back the other way too – in terms of the feel-good factor, experience for their CV and work life through playing a part in community and national events.”

NZAEP is the industry association for event professionals in New Zealand. The not-for-profit association was formed in response to industry demand for a recognised body to represent the burgeoning events industry in New Zealand.
Its mission is to inspire a world class events industry. NZAEP provides its 600+ members support, education, and networking opportunities as well as recognition through its annual industry awards.
