Tie Me Down back to winning form at Awapuni

Imposing mare Tie Me Down showed a last start defeat at Trentham that ended the winning start to her racing career was merely a blip on the radar as she returned to the top of the podium in convincing fashion on her home track at Awapuni on Saturday.

In the process she handed out a beating to a strong line-up of intermediate gallopers which augurs well for her next assignment which will be in stakes company back at Wellington next month.

Trainer Royden Bergerson was philosophical about the Trentham defeat as he reflected on a job well done after the race.

“She didn’t have a lot go right for her leading in to the Trentham race as she was supposed to have started at Otaki when they called that meeting off which meant she hadn’t been to the races for five weeks which probably told in the end,” he explained.

“I think Kelly (Myers) would also admit it wasn’t her best ride that day but if that was a five out of ten effort then Saturday’s was a ten out of ten as she did a super job.”

Myers had the Pins mare one off the fence behind the speed during the running of the rating 75 Murphy Properties Premier before peeling into the open around the home bend and powering home for victory in a tidy 1.35.16 for the 1600 metre journey.

“She’s such a big striding mare that she needs a little bit of time to get wound up but once she hits top gear she can really finish off at a great rate,” said Bergerson.

“If you watch the last 100 metres on Saturday she puts in a couple of huge bounds which is what she can do when she is balanced up and at her peak.”

Successful in four of her five career starts to date, Tie Me Down will have her next run in stakes company with a tilt at the Listed Anniversary Handicap at Trentham on the 17th of January.

“All going well she will have one more run in this campaign which will be in the Anniversary Handicap before we put her out for a short break,” Bergerson said.

“I think she is certainly capable of getting black-type which is what the aim is for her during the autumn if she misses out at Trentham.

“I haven’t spoken with her owners as yet but I have the Brisbane winter carnival in the back of my mind as I think there are couple of perfect races for her there as she is such a well mannered type that the travelling etc. won’t faze her in the slightest.” – NZ Racing Desk
