SAS College Rugby League semi-finalists found
The semi-finalists for the 2014 SAS College Rugby League Premier 1st XIII competitions are confirmed, with spots in the grand finals up for grabs next Wednesday.
In the elite Cup section it is traditional heavyweights St Paul’s who have qualified as the number one seed and will take on 2014’s most-improved side, Manurewa High School.
With a loss in the grading rounds as the only blemish on their record this season, St Paul’s will seek back-to-back titles over the next couple of weeks.
In the other semi Mt Albert host a Kelston side who started the year with much promise, but have struggled to gain any late-season momentum, and just last week fell to sixth-placed Otahuhu College.
The West Auckland school desperately need a boost, and the pressure will be on playmakers Zion Ioka and Kyle Blunkell to produce the goods against a well-drilled MAGS side.
St Paul’s and Mt Albert will go in as favourites, having been the two most-consistent sides throughout the year, but both Kelston and Manurewa have the talent to upset them on the day.
Otahuhu and Western Springs will play for fifth position in the Cup competition.
In the second-tier Plate division top qualifiers Aorere take on Westlake Boys in the first semi, while Southern Cross take on Papakura for the second week in a row in the other game.
Papakura will take a hefty mental advantage into the match, having disposed of their opponents 30-18 only seven days earlier.
Tangaroa and Henderson play for fifth position.
In the Bowl division, the third level of Premier CRL, the championship is decided by league format as opposed to having a finals series.
With two rounds remaining there are four teams – Papatoetoe, Pakuranga, Lynfield and Sir Edmund Hillary – all still in with a shot of taking the title.
A single point separates each of the top four teams from the side above them, guaranteeing an exciting end to the season.
