NZU17: Semi-Final Spots Confirmed

16 July

Forty teams have been whittled down to just four to contest the New Zealand Age Group Netball Championships Under 17 semi-finals at Netball North Harbour on Thursday.

After the opening rounds early Wednesday morning, the top eight teams were confirmed – Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland 1, Auckland 2, Waitakere 1, Dunedin and Taranaki. Some closely contested matches in the afternoon shaped the final draw in which all teams will play-off for their final placing’s in the tournament.

Defending champions Christchurch got off to a great start recording a solid win over high flyers Manawatu 39-23 in the morning, but fell short to Wellington in the afternoon 34-26. The Wellington team remain unbeaten all tournament.

2013 runners-up Auckland 1 comprehensively defeated Harbourside 51-13 earlier in the day, and the Aucklander’s were too good for Hamilton City 37-22, to confirm their place in the semis.

In other matches, Waitakere 1 fended off a strong challenge from Mangere-Otahuhu in the morning, going on to defeat Auckland 2 later in the afternoon 47-26 to secure their semis spot.

And Dunedin are through to the top four after an impressive showing against Kapi Mana to progress to the top eight. A late afternoon come-from-behind victory over Taranaki 34-27 now sees them in line for their highest finish in a number of years.

So, Wellington will play Waitakere in the first semi-final, while Auckland 1 will face Dunedin.

Live streaming will cover the Wellington versus Waitakere 1 match at 11.00am followed by the third versus fourth play-off at 2.00pm and the grand final starting at 3.00pm. Follow all the action on finals day by visiting the Netball New Zealand website for more information.
