YOUNG GUNS STEAL LIMELIGHT AT SOUTH ISLAND 3DE

Eventing New Zealand’s stars of the future stole the limelight at the ESNZ Eventing Canterbury FEI South Island Three Day Event, which concluded at the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island (Christchurch) today.

Pauatahanui’s Kate Fleming put in a stunning performance aboard Mendelssohn across all three days to win the Tavern Harewood CCI2*, as well as the National Three Day Event Young Rider Championship.

The 21-year-old was the only combination left going into today’s show jumping after an action-packed day across country, which saw both Joseph Waldron (Te Awamutu) on Ristretto and defending young rider champion Tayla Mason (Paraparaumu) on Lucy With Diamonds eliminated after falls. Amberley’s Giles Gormack was also eliminated for three refusals on the course, two caused by gear failure.

“It was not something I expected, but it is great to win it,” said Fleming, who admitted to being incredibly nervous before the show jumping, despite only needing to finish with a live score to seal victory. “I kept thinking there was just so much that could go wrong.”

In the Devi Heating Systems CCI1* young rider Sarah Young (Tokoroa) got the result she was after, moving up from second after dressage to clinch victory aboard the Otto and Johnstone family’s Regal Romar, ahead of 17-year-old Davina Waddy(Cheviot) on Millburn Maringo.

For Young, the win was a crucial step in her possible selection for the Oceania NZ Young Rider team to compete in Melbourne in June. “I was thrilled. I came down here hoping for a good result, but you just never know. I am very lucky to have the ride on him,” said Young.

Waddy’s second gave her a landslide victory in the National Three Day Event Junior Rider Championship. It topped off a big weekend for the youngster, whotomorrow will head north to Hamilton to trial for the New Zealand Junior Rowing team to compete at the Junior World Championships.

“It was a very nice surprise. It’s been very busy trying to row and ride this season,” she said. It also puts her at the top of theAlltech Junior Rider Series.

It was a hollow victory for Sam Taylor (Swanannoa) with Leo Degas in the CIC3*, after overnight leader Sarah Dalziell(Masterton) parted company with Benrose Super Star in the show jumping forcing elimination. The win gave Taylor vital points in the ESNZ Eventing Super League Series elevating him into the top six.

A clear show jumping round sealed victory for Palmerston North’s Helen Bruce and Toblerone NZPH in the four-strong CIC2*, while Brent Jury and SE Godswalk took out the Striding Edge Sporthorses CNC1* after Ali Scholes and Alfresco picked up one expensive time penalty dropping her to second.

Timaru’s Amalia Rowley and Starburst came through to win the hotly-contested Hei Hei Pharmacy CCN105 finishing on her dressage score, with the SE & Sam Gilman Farrier CCN95 and Tavern Harewood CCN95 4, 5 & 6 Year-Olds to Kirsten Beaven (West Melton) on Summer Ale, and Larissa Srhoy (Loburn) on Rockquest, respectively.

Success in the Rangiora Vet Centre and Canterbury Equine Clinic CCN80 belonged to Kaiapoi’s Sandy Houston and SE Reprieve, despite dropping two rails in the show jumping.

Eventing Canterbury chairman Bruce Taylor commended riders and volunteers for a top effort, especially given the torrential rain leading up to and during the event. He paid tribute to his small, dedicated committee for pulling off a fantastic event, and thanked all those who had travelled from far a field.
