Teacher Development tops the list for KiwiSport funding
Supporting teachers deliver fundamental movement skills is a feature of the latest round of KiwiSport funding announced by Sport Hawke’s Bay today.
Sport Hawke’s Bay operations manager Roger Coleman said 48 percent of the $52,031 distributed throughout Hawke’s Bay is to be focused on improving the confidence and capability of teachers to deliver fundamental movement skills for their classes.
“We want to see more young people experiencing quality sporting opportunities. These quality experiences will help young people participate in sport and physical activity for life, and supporting teachers will help achieve this.
19 of the 25 successful applications are for improving skills, with a further 18 percent for coaching skill projects.
“We have a very robust criteria to which we score the projects and programmes and we’re thrilled with the caliber of the applications.”
Mr. Coleman said 48 applications were received with just over half being successful following a very robust assessment. Funding ranged form $482 through to $4500.
The Central Hawke’s Bay (CHB) Sports Association, Frasertown School and Mahora School are just three of the 25 successful applicants. The CHB Sports association looks to increase numbers in the sport of orienteering by purchasing equipment to allow all schools (17) in the area to run the KiwiO programme year round.
Frasertown School and Mahora School will also use the funds to purchase equipment. Frasertown School will use that equipment to get more students participating in sport and increase their skill levels, while Mahora School looks to use the equipment purchase of hockey gear to allow for their teams to enter into competitions in the Bay.
KiwiSport aims is to get more children participating in sport more often.
Funding is available twice a year with the next funding applications open on Wednesday, 8th February 2017.
The objectives of KiwiSport are increasing the number of school aged children participating in organised sport during school and after school; increasing the availability and accessibility of sport opportunities for all school aged children by strengthening links with sports clubs and supporting children in developing skills that will enable them to participate effectively in sport at both primary and secondary level.
KiwiSport is administered locally by Sport Hawke’s Bay and since it began in 2009, $2.5 million has been put into 380 projects and programmes throughout the region.
Projects must also leverage additional contributions from other community groups, at least 35% of total project cost and build and strengthen linkages between schools and other community groups.
All applications can be made online at www.sporthb.net.nz
