Wairapapa iwi are a step closer to settling the historical Treaty of Waitangi claims of Rangitane, with the bill now open for public submissions with Parliament’s Maori Affairs Committee.
The House of Representatives recently sat through extended sitting hours to pass the Rangitane Tu Mai Ra (Wairarapa Tamaki nui-a-Rua) Claims Settlement Bill’s first reading.
The bill gives effect to the deed of settlement signed on 6 August 2016 in which the Crown and Rangitane o Wairarapa and Rangitane o Tamaki nui-a-Rua agreed to a final settlement. Once passed, the legislation will give effect to the terms of the settlement, which has been years in the making.
Maori Affairs Committee chairperson Tutehounuku Korako says, “This bill is an opportunity for Wairapapa iwi to address the past, and receive an apology from the Crown which are important steps forward for all New Zealanders.”
“Rangitane is an iwi of about 3,000 people. The area of interest for this bill spans from Makaramu down to Cape Palliser. It encompasses the wider Wairarapa and Tamaki Nui-a-Rua regions. I’d encourage all New Zealanders with Wairapapa whakapapa to have their say about this bill,” he said.
