New Student Business Now Underway
Employment offered for A Grade Students
Christchurch, September 19, 2016: A group of students from St. Andrews College have launched a new business aimed at providing parents with cost effective tutoring whilst also giving students part time employment as a reward for gaining good marks. The group consisting of Nick Marriott, Mack Mayell, Louis Hawkins and Logan Sergeant were awarded runners up this year in the regional Dragons Den competition for their business idea and presentation.
The group have created a website where parents can view the subjects being offered and a brief bio of each student. The website only collects a small one-off fee and parents are then free to contact and book students to help their children. This type of peer learning is often helpful to children who struggle with the usual teacher to multiple student model.
“When we researched our audience we often found that kids just needed things explained to them in a one of one environment where they were not embarrassed to ask an adult what may seem a dumb question”, said business leader Nick Marriott. “We also found students sometimes struggle with group settings, therefore we made sure all our tutoring is done on 1 on 1”.
“We have started with a select group of high achieving St Andrews students and are keen to roll this out to other schools and areas of Christchurch, then around New Zealand. Their current expertise covers Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Digital Technology, History just to name a few. With NCEA exams coming up in the next few months we feel the extra help could make the difference between achieving a merit or an excellence for many pupils,” said Marriott.
“Ellena was our first booking, from there all feedback was very positive from all involved. Ellena is one of the top students at St Andrew’s College and has already achieved excellence in many Level 3 NCEA subjects including Chemistry, English, Physics and more,” said Marriott.
Their website can be found at www.student-direct.net or at Facebook by searching for student direct tutoring.
