Hexalogy is an exhibition showcasing the art works of six Art Academy students, opening on the 22nd September at the Geoff Wilson Gallery. The title is not only suggestive of the number of students exhibiting, but is also illustrative of a sense of cohesiveness within the quality of the works. Much like a literary production there is an emotive and visual story being woven together. The exhibition touches on broad issues such as the hierarchical relationships within the natural world, culture and symbols of belonging and separation. Within these philosophies and value systems the sense of illumination between dark and light is echoed in the strong sense of chiaroscuro in many of the art works. Overall the students suggest that the viewer bring their own interpretation to their works, and take with them an opening for further thought and questioning.

The Art Academy is a secondary- tertiary partnership, where secondary school students are given the opportunity to learn about professional practice in the arts at NorthTec’s Raumanga campus. Students meet once a week from their prospective secondary schools to develop their understanding of the tertiary environment. In addition, field trips- where students visit galleries and artist studios- and skills based holiday programmes form part of the Art Academy curriculum.

Tutor Lisa Clunie says; ‘It is a chance for the students to get an idea of what it is like in the tertiary sector and how to become professional practitioners in the creative industries’- she believes there is a need for students to be guided through the transition between secondary and tertiary education. Tyler Arnold, a current Art Academy student, comments on the opportunities that this affords; ‘Gaining the knowledge necessary to be qualified in the field of Arts… meeting new people, interpreting their art works, seeing their perspectives and what inspires them in order to help make my own work’.

The Art Academy is in its third year with plans to develop further into the digital design sector in 2017, with content planned to include web design, animation and video production.

Please join the artists at the opening of Hexalogy from 4- 6pm on Thursday 22nd of September at North Tec’s Geoff Wilson Gallery. Hexaology will run until Thursday the 6th of October.
