Wellington international enrolments up
9%
There were almost 650 additional international student enrolments in Wellington last year, with a 9 per cent increase for the region, according to the latestInternational Education Snapshot Report released today.
Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce says the report shows a significant increase in the number of international students choosing to study across New Zealand.
“Total income from tuition fees rose to more than $1 billion nationwide. This is a record for the international education sector in New Zealand and is a tribute to the combined efforts of everyone involved.”
Wellington’s total international student enrolments reached 7,456. Most of this was driven by growth in the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) sector and at Private Training Establishments (PTEs).
ITPs experienced a 32 per cent increase (348 enrolments), PTEs had a rise of 14 per cent on the previous year (197 enrolments) and enrolments at universities increased by 4 per cent (132 enrolments).
The Wellington International Student Growth Plan was launched in January by the Wellington Regional Economic Growth Agency with the support of regional institutions, Wellington City Council and Education New Zealand. The programme focusses on the international student experience, destination marketing, building industry capacity and career pathways.
“Every region in New Zealand experienced an increase in enrolments. International students don’t only contribute significantly to regional economies, they increase our cultural awareness and boost our links with the rest of the world. It’s great to see Wellington play a significant part in increasing New Zealand’s global connectivity.”
International education is New Zealand’s fifth largest export industry and supports more than 30,000 jobs. Figures released by Statistics New Zealand shows the industry is worth $3.1 billion.
