Mission Impossible? - Returning the Mauri of the Ecosystem to its pre-Rena State

This months Nga Pae o te Maramatanga Horizons of Insight Seminar, presented by Dr Kepa Morgan, will describe the contribution that the Mauri model has made to better understanding the complexity of one of New Zealand's worst environmental disasters, the shipwreck of the MV Rena on the tupuna Otaiti (Astrolabe Reef).

Demonstrating the significant contribution that can be made from scientific studies grounded in matauranga Maori, Te Arawa Takutai Moana focused the nation's response with the goal of restoring the mauri of the environment to its pre-Rena state.

This created an opportunity to respond to the Rena grounding in a manner consistent with the indigenous knowledge framework that was most relevant to those most significantly affected - the local hapu and whanau.

Kepa will talk through the multiple wananga that were conducted with local whanau, the monitoring activities that occurred and are still underway, future recovery and remediation options and their potential impacts and also the impending Environment Court hearing (June, 2015) on whether the remnants of the Rena will be left on the reef, or not.
