Perspectives on climate change as a global environmental, social, cultural and economic challenge is the subject of a seminar hosted by the University of Auckland next month.
The ‘Great Minds and Big Ideas’ seminar series brings together leading researchers to open a fascinating window into world-class research being carried out at the University.
Next month’s seminar, Climate Change in the 21st Century: Food, Health, Politics and Socio-Economics, features Dr Jim Salinger, Honorary Academic, University of Auckland School of Environment, Professor Alistair Woodward from the University’s School of Population Health and business journalist and commentator Rod Oram.
Dr Salinger will discuss the impact of climate change on agriculture and fisheries and highlight the scientific uncertainties, risks and future impacts of climate change.
Dr Salinger has been involved for 35 years in research and analysis of climate change and is currently a Visiting Scientist, IBIMET-CNR in Rome.
Professor Alistair Woodward will discuss how climate change will affect human health, both in direct and specific ways such as heat waves, and less direct impacts such as the spread of vector borne diseases.
Professor Woodward is a professor in the University of Auckland’s School of Population Health.
Business journalist and commentator Rod Oram will discuss the role politics plays in the mitigation of climate change effects and the role of financial mechanisms such as carbon markets and carbon taxes.
Mr Oram is a columnist for the Sunday Star-Times and a regular broadcaster on radio and television.
