Safer skies as a result of Members Bill

National MP Dr Cam Calder’s bill to reduce the risks posed by hand-held lasers has passed its final reading yesterday in Parliament.

“Time and again lives are being put in danger by an idiot or idiots misusing a laser pointer. My Summary Offences (Possession of High-power Lasers) Amendment Bill has made possession of a hand-held laser in a public place, without reasonable excuse, an offence,” Dr Calder said.

“High power laser pointers, some of which can project beams over 60 miles can be extraordinarily dangerous if used irresponsibly. My Bill will bring greater accountability, and offer Police an additional tool to deal with this reckless behaviour.

“Last year, 119 cases of laser strike on the cockpit of aircraft were recorded in NZ alone. The consequences of laser strike on a pilot’s night vision can be potentially catastrophic.

“This Bill is timely; it will have a preventative effect and will reduce the chances of these devices being misused.

“Laser pointers are not toys, and I am glad we are acting to reduce the huge harm the misuse of these devices can cause.” Dr Calder said.
