Nominated US Ambassador 'honoured' to serve in NZ

6 Nov 2009

USA - The United States' nominated ambassador to New Zealand has said he would be honoured to work in the South Pacific.

In a statement to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, David Huebner said that, having spent most of his adult life working in international law and business around the Pacific Rim, he knew first-hand the opportunities and challenges the US faced in the region.

"Our ties with New Zealand are stronger now than at any time since 1985 and our interaction continues to grow," he said.

"Despite being thousands of miles apart and separated by the vast Pacific Ocean, our two countries have a similar vision in which we seek a more secure, prosperous, and open global community."

The appointment has to be confirmed by the Senate.

If that was done he would be the new administration's first openly gay ambassador.
