New Zealand still on top in per capita medals table – Media release

13 September 2016

New Zealand remains at the top of the world for medals per capita at the Rio Paralympics, with four more medals.

On a population basis, New Zealand’s 13 medals in total puts us ahead of tiny Cape Verde in second and the Netherlands in third place.

New Zealand has the equivalent of 2.87 medals per million population, more than double the rate of Australia on 1.42 medals per million.

New Zealand athletes have picked up seven gold, three silver and three bronze medals so far, more than half way to achieving both team targets of 12 gold medals and 18 medals in total.

On the gold medals per capita table, New Zealand also comes in at first place, ahead of Latvia in second and Slovakia in third. New Zealand has won the equivalent of 1.55 gold medals per million population, more than three times the rate of Great Britain on 0.43 gold medals per million.

Swimmer Cameron Leslie won gold in the men's 150m individual medley race SM4.

Swimmer Sophie Pascoe won another gold medal in the women’s 100m butterfly S10.

Sprinter Liam Malone also won gold in the men's 200m sprint T43/44.

Nikita Howarth won a bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly S7.

Note: Some figures provided in Statistics NZ’s 12 September update on per capita tables for the Paralympics were incorrect. While the per capita medal tally for New Zealand was correct, unfortunately the Olympics gold medal tallies for some other countries including Fiji and Jamaica were incorrectly included in the Paralympics table. Additional processes have been put into place to ensure this does not happen again and Statistics NZ is sorry for any confusion caused.
