Making the ordinary extraordinary

Two fresh and innovative exhibitions will open at the Ashburton Art Gallery next week. One will give you a taste of street art with revamped skateboards while the other is a series of video works which explore the commonplace as you have never experienced before.

Everyday Things is presented by CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand features video works that explore the nuances of ordinary actions and brings together six films which highlight the strange, surprising and humorous moments. Included in this exhibition are works by Samoan multimedia artist Angela Tiatia and celebrated Korean artist Seung Yul Oh, Melbourne based Daniel Von Strumer along with New Zealand based artists Steve Carr, Lanye Waerea and Kate Woods. These works will surprise you, fill you with anticipation and make you perceive your everyday in a new way.

The Ashburton Art Gallery are thrilled to bring Everyday Things to a Canterbury audience with the assistance of CIRCUIT. CIRCUIT is an arts agency which celebrates New Zealand artists working in moving image through the commissioning of works, distribution, critical review and professional practice initiatives.

Gallery Manager Shirin Khosraviani is supportive of the work CIRCUIT do on behalf of film and video artists. “We are thrilled to be able to bring the work of six artists to Ashburton and showcase the varied approach that they each employ in communicating through moving image”

Everyday Things will be available for viewing from Saturday 17 September.

To further explore the transformation of the ordinary, the Gallery will also be displaying the works of Ashburton College Year 10 students for a 3-week period beginning Saturday 10th September. 28 handmade and repurposed skateboards have been sprayed, stencilled and reborn as new works of art by local college students and take inspiration from poetry, street art and heartfelt personal circumstances. The boards will be on display until the first week of the school holidays.
