Sport Hawke’s Bay and Pettigrew.Green Arena to
host top Australian NBL Coaches
Hawke’s Bay will soon play host to the SKY CITY NZ Breakers and Brisbane Bullets, playing at the Pettigrew Green Arena on September 15th as part of a pre-season tour. As part of the tour, Sport Hawke’s Bay and Pettigrew.Green Arena will be hosting a free workshop with the special guests being the coaches of both teams, including Hawke’s Bays very own Paul Henare.
Held at Pettigrew.Green Arena on Wednesday 14th September from 7pm, both Henare and Brisbane Bullets and Australian Boomers Head Coach, Andrej Lemanis will speak about what they believe it takes to become an elite athlete. This will be followed by a Question and Answer session. The duo will be joined by Breakers assistant coaches, Judd Flavell and Michael Fitchett, along with Brisbane Bullet assistant coaches CJ Bruton and Mick Downer.
Henare is the only SKY CITY Breaker to have won a championship as a coach and player. As a player, the Napier Boys’ High product played in 250 games over eight seasons for the franchise, as well as playing for the New Zealand Tall Blacks. The 2016/17 season will see him enter into his fourth season with the Breakers coaching staff.
The Bullets’ Lemanis began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant coach for the Geelong Supercats. Prior to that, he was a member of the team that won the NBL Championship in 1992. He also coached the New Zealand Breakers for eight consecutive seasons from 2005, including the 2011, 2012 and 2013 championship seasons and was named the NBL Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
The 2016 Sileni Estate Coach of the Year Paul Henare is delighted at the response from the Hawkes Bay coaching community. “I am thrilled but not surprised that the uptake has been so strong. Hawke’s Bay is such a strong sporting region and it is wonderful to see that so many people are keen to come along and share in the conversation around coach and athlete development.”
“Andrej and I are both passionate about sharing our knowledge and our ideas to help others develop along their own pathways and to in turn share that learned knowledge with other coaches and athletes.” Henare added
“I am sure there will be things for us both to learn and apply to our own environments. As a player and a coach you never stop learning, regardless of how long you have been in the game or what level you are at.”
The workshop is open to the general public; however, individuals must register with Tim Motu, Sport Hawke’s Bays Coaching Development Officer at [email protected]
