Finals Night – come and support
the next generation of singers
This contest provides a unique opportunity for singers aged between 8 - 18 years, from all areas of Auckland to join together and demonstrate their talents.
The exciting Final Awards night is held on Friday 9 September, 7pm at St Marks Church Hall, Remuera and everyone is welcome to attend the finals to support these future performers. The stage will be set as selected finalists entertain the audience and the experienced judges choose the lucky winners in three age categories. Prizes include money towards their ongoing music studies other performing opportunities through Opera Factory Trust and extended networks.
The Opera Idol Song Contest is aimed at school students all over Auckland, to encourage their passion for performance and singing and to ignite their interest in opera and classical vocal repertoire. This year, the Opera Idol contest turns 10, having been produced annually by the Opera Factory Trust since 2007. Over its ten-year history, this competition has seen some amazing young singers in training and many have entered tertiary training, become finalists in prestigious local and international competitions, entered emerging artist programmes and even developed successful careers here and overseas.
Singers will be accompanied by professional pianist Rosie Barnes and judges for this year include Christine Hallett a busy itinerant teacher at many Auckland schools and Andrew Conley, professional opera singer in New Zealand the UK and founding member of Opera Factory.
This year, entrants will also be invited to participate in a school holiday workshop “Opera Chorus Sing-In” following the contest, where they will get the chance to learn some famous opera choruses and work with professional tutors and singers to prepare the music and semi-stage the selected items.
Opera Factory is a charitable trust formed in 2000 and provides a variety of professionally guided activities offering performance, opportunity, education, training and mentoring to singers of all ages and levels as well as presenting community based chamber operas, daytime recitals, themed concerts and special events.
